Welcome to my website. I would like to give women a better understanding of a doula's role. I feel it is a real privilege to be the first practicing certified doula for Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend. I hope you find my website to be friendly and informative. The word "doula" which comes from Greek, today refers to a woman trained and experienced in childbirth. When you are reading about childbirth you will find doulas are called many names. Birth assistant, labor support specialist, professional labor assistant, childbirth assistant, labor support professional, birth companion, labor assistant and monitrice. There are two types of doula, birth doula and postpartum doula. A doula is not a midwife therefore does no prenatal care and does not deliver your baby. During your pregnancy you will decide to participate in childbirth education classes, prepare a birth plan and make decisions of what you would like for your labor and the birth of your baby. A doula is not there to take over the role of labor coach from the dad, but to enhance the birth experience for everyone. You may have special health problems from pregnancy such as being a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) or PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension) and a doula's knowledge and support can be a comfort for mother and father. Doulas come with a bag of supplies to help keep the mother comfortable during labor.
After the birth of your baby your doula can assist you
in breast or bottle feeding your newborn. A doula can
be a support person for you after you have arrived
home with your baby and have question. The goal of
the doula is for you to have the best birth experience
you can have and the support you need to achieve it.
